Reblooming & Award Winning!
In this case, a "black eye" is a plus. Blackeyed Stella is far from flawed. The name describes the reddish orange eye zone on its gold-colored petals that surround a small black center. The plant draws attention for its unique colors and burst-like blooms that keep coming all season long.
Award Winning
This 1994 winner of the All-American Daylily Selection Council Award is a top performer and stunner in any landscape. And it's versatile. Blackeyed Stella thrives in nearly every type of soil: normal, sandy or clay, along with neutral, acidic, or alkaline pH. The stunning blooms open in late afternoon and remain open until dawn, for a total of 16 hours of color. Plant the daylily in mixed perennial beds and borders near a window or patio area where you typically enjoy warm evenings. Or add Blackeyed Stella to your kitchen garden for color, butterflies and culinary enjoyment. It's said that the flowers are edible.
It Blooms '– and Blooms Again
Blackeyed Stella blooms might last only a day, but not to worry. This daylily variety is well known for its excellent reblooming. The flowers, about three inches in diameter and on stalks up to 18 inches tall, start showing up in spring in most zones and keep opening all summer long. When the daylily stops blooming, the plant remains an attractive clump of deep green, grass-like foliage throughout fall before fading. All the plant needs to keep blooming is plenty of sun and some water. This easy-care daylily is somewhat drought tolerant and won't rust in humid conditions.
Grows in Nearly Every Zone
All-American selections are evaluated across five hardiness zones. The Blackeyed Stella daylily outdid expectations, performing well in USDA zones 3 through 9. It's an excellent daylily choice for coastal areas. The variety might need a little more than six hours of sun a day in northern zones, but it also handles heat well. In late fall, gardeners can remove faded foliage.
