White Spring Flowers, Red Fall Berries!
Two Looks in OneFrom the soft, wispy white flowers that bloom in the spring to the vibrant, reddish-orange berries in the fall, the Pyracantha Mohave is a gorgeous plant year-round. The berries that form from mid-August through the winter season are extremely bitter to humans, so you won't want to eat them, but if you enjoy wildlife, you'll see plenty of birds and critters visiting them in the fall for some real camera-worthy moments.
Highly Versatile and Tolerant
Pyracantha Mohave is highly resistant and tolerant to plant diseases fire blight and scab, which means you'll spend less time babying it and more time marveling over its beauty.
It's also a tolerant plant that grows in several climates including dry or poor soil and partial sunlight. Its best flower and fruit production occurs with exposure to full sunlight, but will still produce both in lesser quantities when exposed to partial sun. The Pyracantha Mohave is not a plant you'll want indoors due to its size.
Key Features
An evergreen plant, its dark green leaves are leathery to the touch with thorny branches. It grows much like a vine and makes a beautiful accent plant when you plant just one or when planted in groups, form a barrier hedge when you just want some privacy or to make a bold, colorful statement.
To Prune or Not To Prune
Regular pruning is necessary to keep the plant from growing out of control, although if you're content with it running up a wall or fence line, you're welcome to leave it as-is.
If you choose to prune, it's best to do it after the spring flower blooms, but doing so may inadvertently remove some of the budding berries. If you're growing Pyracantha Mohave as an essential food source for wildlife in the winter, it's best to leave some branches alone so they'll continue to produce the berries.
Pyracantha Mohave grows pretty tall, up to 12 feet with a spread of 10 feet, encompassing a rather large area.
