Bright Color During the Boring Months
Your Shishi Gashira Camellia comes to life with giant, stunning blooms during the winter... a time when the rest of your garden is dull and dormant. A true statement piece down to its name meaning "the lion knows" in Japanese.
Enjoy a flurry of huge pink blooms that start in late fall or early winter. These flowers really pop against its deep green foliage. In fact, most people think that the Shi Shi Gashira blossoms are very reminiscent of giant rose blooms.
A Colorful Shrub that Looks Great Anywhere
These plants have a moderate growth rate and on average reaches 5 feet tall, so they will fit in small areas with no trouble.
The Shishi Gashira Camellia looks marvelous both pruned to shape or allowed to grow naturally for a beautiful woodland look.
A Favorite among Landscapers
The vibrant rosy blossoms of the Shishi Gashira have quite an impact when planted in groups. We recommend groups of 3 or 5. Plant several in a front garden and be warmed by their intense beauty during the long, dull winter days.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant in an area with some shade - any location that gets about 3 to 6 hours of sunlight per day and is well-drained.
Dig a hole that's about two to three times the size of your plant's rootball, place your Camellia, and backfill the soil.
If you're container planting, select a pot that's about twice the size of your shipped container and ensure it has drainage holes. Use organic soil and place your plant.
2. Watering: Feel the soil every few days. If the soil is dry about 3 inches down, then gently give your Camellia a bit of water. Allow the water to soak into the soil as you pour.
3. Fertilizing: Fertilize your Camellia in the spring after the flowers have dropped. Using a soluble fertilizer for acid-loving plants once or twice a month in spring and mid-summer is best.
4. Pruning: After your blooming season has ended, you’ll want to remove any dead or weak wood (a gray tinge to the bark is an easy way to identify dead branches). Thin out the growth a bit as well.

Planting Care for the Shi-Shi Gashira Camellia Shrub
Plant in an area that gets partial to full shade (3 to 6 hours of sunlight daily) and has well-draining soil. Try to plant the camellia in a location that offers some protection during the cold winds of winter.
Keep the soil moist about 2 to 3 inches down during the first year of growth. After that, regular rainfall will be sufficient.
Fertilize in the spring after the flowers have dropped using a soluble fertilizer for acid-loving plants. Feed once or twice a month in spring and mid-summer.
