Slender Hinoki Cypress Tree Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Gracilis'
Product Description
Plant This Narrow Tree Almost Anywhere!
One of the most unusual evergreens available, the Slender Hinoki Cypress Tree lives up to its name! This skinny tree grows in an appealing pyramidal shape that won't exceed four or five feet in width.
The tree's needles also offer a dense texture that makes it stand out from other greenery in the garden, and it grows with some attractive spacing in between branches, adding to its unique charm.
Gardeners choose the Slender Hinoki because it's ideal for small areas in their landscaping. The tree grows neither particularly tall nor wide, so you can plant it close to your home without worry. It even thrives in containers!
The Slender Hinoki is so popular because of its hardiness. Like other Cypress Trees, this variety loves snow, ice, and temperatures down to -20 degrees. It's also drought tolerant and even flourishes in less-desirable soils!
If you’re searching for the perfect tree for a small spot you worry you’ll never fill, look no further than the Slender Hinoki. Order yours today!
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Full sun (6 to 8 hours of sunlight daily) is best for your Hinoki, but it grows in almost any soil, provided that it's well-drained.
Dig a hole that is twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Set your tree in the hole. Gently spread the roots outward and keep the tree straight as you backfill the hole. Use about 3 inches of organic mulch to keep the soil moist and to prevent competitive weeds from growing near the base of your tree.
You may stake for support as well. After one season of growth, you should be able to remove the stakes. To be sure that your tree is ready to stand on its own, just shake the center. If the root ball has no movement, then your tree’s roots have established and you can remove the support.
2. Watering: Water evenly until the soil becomes moist. You’ll want the area to look and feel moist but not to the point where it’s oversaturated or murky. Allow the soil to dry for a few days until it feels dry to the touch about half an inch below the surface. A slow drip from a garden hose works best as it allows the water to penetrate the soil deeply.
3. Fertilizing: Fertilize your tree after a year of growth, once the root system has had enough time to establish. Using a general fertilizer formula such as 10-10-10 once every spring will give it a boost.
4. Pruning: These trees require very little pruning. If you're shaping your tree, prune in the winter.
