Captivating White Flowers
With its flower petals fluttering in the breeze, sweetly scented Angel Wing Jasmine (Jasminum nitidum) is a super "filler plant" for bare garden spots and containers. It's a shrub that likes to spread out, with a growth habit that mimics that of vines! But the alluring scent of Angel Wing Jasmine flowers is its main attraction. Plant it near your favorite outdoor sitting area, beside the entrance to your home, or along a walkway so you can enjoy its heavenly fragrance.
Lush and Fast Growth
Angel Wing Jasmine is not a sparse plant. Its thick foliage quickly grows into a "filler plant" that easily reaches 10 feet tall (if supported). It responds well to pruning, so you can trim it to any size or shape if you want a more restrained and manicured appearance.
• Pinwheel flowers. In springtime, Angel Wing Jasmine flowers burst open from purple buds to reveal pure-white petals with purplish undersides! They typically open at night, and their bloom season is long '– from spring through summer.
• Glossy green leaves. Angel Wing Jasmine's two-inch white flowers really pop against the shiny, deep-green foliage. Even when it's not in bloom, the glossy leaves make a beautiful backdrop for other landscape plantings.
• Fast-growing. Since it's a reliable perennial only in USDA Plant Hardiness zones 10 and 11, fast growth is a plus in all other zones. If protected during the winter in Zone 9 with row covers or lightweight landscape fabric, Angel Wing Jasmine may remain semi-evergreen. In Zone 8, the plant will die to the ground when frost nips it, but it typically re-sprouts from the roots if it's been mulched heavily. Whether you treat it as an annual, tender perennial, or hardy perennial, it grows quickly and flowers each growing season!
Part Shrub, Part Vine
The landscape design options are many, considering Angel Wing Jasmine can be used as a shrub or a shrubby vine. You can train it to climb fences, trellises, arbors, and pergolas. It adds texture and movement to the landscape as it cascades over retaining walls or scrambles down slopes. It's also a beautiful container plant in patio pots or deck planters where you'll be able to enjoy its fragrant flowers.
Easy Care and Low Maintenance
You'll want to find a sunny spot to plant Angel Wing Jasmine to maximize its flowering potential. This plant does like moist soil, but the soil must drain well. After its first year of establishment, Angel Wing Jasmine is fairly drought-tolerant, although it appreciates deep drinks of water during times of low rainfall. Container plants may need to be watered weekly during hot summer weather. Apply an all-purpose fertilizer in spring to maintain healthy growth and produce abundant flowers!
