Sky Pencil Holly Tree Ilex crenata 'Sky Pencil'
Product Description
Landscape Designers' Weapon of Choice
Does your planting bed or foundation need a little something extra... but you don't know what?
Usually a little vertical height will tie everything together, particularly where a lot of low bedding flowers and plants are used.
Sky Pencil Japanese Holly adds this height without taking up a lot of space. Plus you can easily keep it at any size you want.
To accent a flower bed, keep it at about 3-4 feet tall.
To frame an elegant entryway, let them reach 6 feet or more. They do great in containers or the ground.
Sky Pencil is evergreen, so you get color during the winter to brighten up an otherwise brown landscape.
Left alone, they grow up to 10 feet tall and still maintain a slender, columnar shape.
The Sky Pencil Holly is low maintenance and just does what it's supposed to, without problems. Water it regularly in its first year to establish a healthy root system...and that's it!
Sky Pencil Japanese Hollies are a popular plant and they are in short supply, so order yours today.
Planting and Care
1. Planting: Choose a planting location with ample sunlight and protection from harsh winds. Although partial sun is tolerable, we recommend full sun (6 to 8 hours of sunlight each day) whenever possible. For best growing results, make sure the soil drains well.
Then, dig the hole twice the width and the same depth as the Sky Pencil’s root ball. Carefully place the tree in the center of the hole, hold the sky pencil straight and begin to back fill with the removed soil. Add organic matter to the soil as necessary to improve drainage. Water the planting site to settle the soil and then mulch to retain sol moisture.
2. Watering: Water your Sky Pencil Holly regularly to help the root system become well established. As a good rule of thumb, check soil surrounding your tree to make sure it’s moist, but not soggy. If the leaves become pale green in color this could be an indication that too much water is present in the soil.
3. Fertilizing: Fertilize your Sky Pencil Holly tree once annually with a slow-release fertilizer.
Pollination Info
Sky Pencil Holly Tree Pollination
We carry male and female hollies at our nursery, and you will need both to produce berries on the female plant. However, hollies are hard to tell apart when they are not fruiting, and we can’t guarantee whether you will receive a male or female. For best results, we suggest planting in groups to enjoy berries on the female plants and lush greenery on both year-round.
