Abundantly Colorful, Exotic Cherries
For a truly unusual addition to your landscape, consider adding a Star Cherry Tree (Pitangatuba). This is not your typical Cherry Tree, due to its unique, bright-red fruit with distinctive lobes. It's sure to become the star of the show!
The Pitangatuba Cherry itself isn’t just visually interesting, either. The fruit tastes delicious, too, with a sweet-and-sour flavor comparable to passion fruit or apricot.
And this fruit tree is as versatile as it is attractive, reaching a mature height and width of only 3-6 feet. No one will be able to pass through your yard without commenting on the ripening green, yellow, and red cherries, or the white flowers atop dark green foliage.
The Star Cherry Tree’s small size means you can plant it almost anywhere, including in containers. It also thrives in any soil type, and adapts well to drought or freezing temperatures. With a tree this flexible, your planting possibilities are endless!
If you plan to grow your Star Cherry Tree from seed, you’re in for a long wait until you can enjoy your cherries. That's not the case when you order from BrighterBlooms.com. Our trees are grafted from stock, not seed, meaning they will produce plenty of fruit year after year.
For a tree that will produce cherries in fewer growing seasons than other Pitangatuba options, choose our carefully-cultivated trees. Get your Star Cherry Tree today!
Planting & Care
Planting
When planting your Star Cherry Tree, choose a location that receives six to eight hours of sunlight per day. If you’re planting in the ground, leave at least four feet from nearby greenery. Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as your root ball. Place your tree in the hole, keeping the trunk straight. Backfill your hole, tamping down the soil to remove air pockets as you go. If you plant in a pot, choose a container that is 18 to 24 inches wide and at least 20 inches tall.
Watering
Plan to water your tree at least once a week. Don’t over-water if the top two inches of soil are still moist.
Fertilizing
Fertilize using a water-soluble fertilizer once a year, so you get more fruit.
Pruning
You only need to prune your tree if you want to keep its star shape or to remove damaged branches.
Pollination
The Pitangatuba cherry tree is self-fertilizing, so you only need one to produce fruit. However, if you add a second tree, your cherry yield will increase.
